What is a Vape Tank?

Before we get started looking at the great range of tanks available, let’s answer a big question – what is a vape tank?

Put as simply as possible, your tank is the part of your e-cigarette or vape device where you put the e-liquid. That might be all you need to know, particularly if you’re a beginner vaper or just moving into the world of intermediate devices. However, if you’re a more advanced user or simply want to understand more about the world of vaping, there are a few different products you should know about.

Sometimes a vape tank is also known as a clearomiser – they both refer to the e-liquid storage part of your device. Vape tanks can also be refillable, or they can come pre-filled with e-liquid. Vape tanks can also be refillable, or they can come pre-filled with e-liquid. However, most intermediate and advanced vape tanks are refillable, so you can add, remove or change up your e-liquid whenever you want!

Vape Coils

Inside your vape tank, you’ll find your vape coils. Thevape coils are the part of the e-cigarette that heats the e-liquid and transforms it into a vaporised state that is ready for you to inhale. Vape coils are created from wire that is then wrapped around the wicking material that absorbs the e-liquid in a spiral pattern. The battery powers and heats the coil, which then heats the e-liquid in the tank to generate sweet, fluffy vapour! All you need to do is inhale and enjoy! Vape coils are often interchangeable within vape tanks, as they can have a big impact on your vape style and how your e-cig performs – but more on that in a moment…

Mouth to Lung Tanks

Mouth-to-lung tanks are designed to be used for, unsurprisingly, mouth-to-lung vaping! Mout-to-lung or MTL vaping is a vape style that is the closest to tobacco smoking. When you inhale from your e-cig, you simply hold the vapour in your mouth for a second before inhaling. This gives you excellent flavour and a strong, intense nicotine rush from your vape.

MTL coils are designed to have a bit more resistance in them, which is what gives you the intense flavour, great nicotine rush and satisfying throat hit associated MTL vaping, but they do sacrifice vapour production to get there. “Resistance” in this case, refers to the ohms of your coil. Mouth-to-lung vape tanks contain coils with a resistance of higher than 1.0 ohms, while sub-ohm and DTL coils have a resistance of less than 1.0 ohms.

You’ll want to make sure that you have a fairly even PG/VG mix, or a PG-heavy formula, if you’re looking for an e-liquid or vape juice to use with your mouth-to-lung vape. The substance in e-liquids that produces that distinctive “throat hit” sensation is PG, or propylene glycol, so the more intense you prefer your throat hit, the higher the concentration of PG you should choose. Too high though, and it can make you feel unwell or give you too rough a hit, so it’s best to start with a 50/50 combination, and once you’re more comfortable vaping mouth-to-lung, you can change your e-liquids from there.

High-PG e-liquids are used in MTL vape tanks more often than not as PG is an excellent flavour carrier, which is one of the key reasons that mouth-to-lung vaping is a better choice for so-called “flavour chasers”. Mouth-to-lung vaping is also the choice of many ex-smokers, as it allows nicotine to be delivered more intensely. In mouth-to-lung vaping, higher nicotine concentrations can be used, making it easier to effectively satisfy your cravings.

Sub Ohm Tanks

Sub-ohm vaping is a form of vaping that uses coils with a resistance of lower than 1 ohm. Together with high battery power and an open airflow, this low resistance works to create the enormous vapour cloudsthat are so commonly associated with sub-ohm vaping.

But how do low resistance coils create those famous sub-ohm vapour clouds? The secret to a lower resistance coil is using thicker wire for the body of the coil. The thicker the wire, the greater the coil’s surface area, which ensures that more liquid can be vaporised, so you can see much larger vapour clouds than you are used to from MTL tanks and devices, which are usually around the 1-2-ohm mark.

However, sub-ohm vaping is still the choice of many vapers as you get warm comfortable vapour on the inhale, and of course, excellent cloud production. Sub-ohm vaping is renowned for helping users create intense, thick, fluffy clouds of vapour for the ultimate cloud chasing experience!

Rebuildable, RTA & RDA

For many years, the “drop-in” coils that you can buy now and come as standard in most vape devices simply didn’t exist! Before drop-in coils became mainstream, advanced vapers would build their own coils, which is where the term “rebuildable” comes from. Today, you don’t need to use a rebuildable coil to get a high-performing vape, but some vapers do still prefer to create their own coil, and there are two ways to do this: with RTAs and RDAs.

RTA stands for Rebuildable Tank Atomiser, and refers to any tank with a rebuildable coil. Once it’s set up, you simply use it the same way you would any other vape tank, but many advanced vapers believe that an RTA system is the best way to get excellent flavour production from your vape.

RDA, on the other hand, stands for Rebuildable Drip Atomiser, and is one of the best ways to create thick, fluffy clouds we all know and love so much. However, you don’t fill your e-liquid tank all the way with an RDA, so it can become a bit inconvenient for vapers on the go.

These are only recommended for experienced vapers with a good knowledge of Ohm’s Law.
